Viterbo mayor probed as part of regional corruption scandal

(ANSA) - Viterbo, September 27 - Viterbo Mayor Giulio Marini from the centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) party is being probed for possible contract rigging for Italy's top wine trade show Vinitaly in 2011, investigators said on Thursday. The probes are part of broader investigations into Franco Fiorito, the former regional PdL party whip, for suspected embezzlement of party funds and an overall larger corruption scandal in Lazio that caused its governor Renata Polverini to quit this week. Another 10 people are being probed along with Marini, including three regional officials and three Viterbo civil servants for corruption, extortion, libel and false invoicing for media and promotional activities linked to the region's participation in the wine expo that draws around 150,000 visitors annually. photo: Lazio Governor Renata Polverini and Viterbo Mayor Giulio Marini.
