Soccer: Juve pay tribute to Fiorentina after surviving scare

(ANSA) - Rome, September 26 - Juventus paid tribute to Fiorentina after their bitter rivals ended the Serie A champions' perfect start to the season on Tuesday when they held them to a 0-0 draw. The Turin giants were lucky to keep the unbeaten record that they have carried into the new campaign after not losing a league match last term. Fiorentina's Montenegro striker Stevan Jovetic hit the crossbar on Tuesday and the hosts failed to convert a string of good chances, including a splendid one squandered in the first half by Serb midfielder Adem Ljajic. "We came up against a strong Fiorentina side. They're excellently drilled and well organised on the pitch," said Juve's assistant coach Massimo Carrera, who stands in on matchdays for boss Antonio Conte, who is serving a 10-month match-fixing ban. "We didn't manage to execute what we'd prepared, but full credit to our opponents. "It's a difficult venue to come to and we knew that. It was their game of the season and we managed to contain them". Juve's unimpressive showing may have been down to fatigue, which pundits said could be a warning sign for Conte, whose side are also challenging for glory in the Champions League this term. Last season Juve, who drew 2-2 at Chelsea in their Champions League opener last week, had more time to rest between matches because they were not involved in European competition. "We're tyring to keep working (on our game in training) in spite of the heavy fixture schedule," said Carrera. "We're unable to do as much as we did last season". Juventus are top of Serie A with 13 points from five games but second-placed Napoli can pull level with them if they beat third-placed Lazio at home when most of the rest of Serie A's midweek schedule is played on Wednesday.
