PdL 'appreciates' Polverini's actions in face of emergency

Berlusconi commends Lazio governor's resignation

(ANSA) - Rome, September 25 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi said on Tuesday that his People of Freedom (PdL) party "appreciated" the decision by Lazio Governor Renata Polverini to quit because of a corruption scandal in the region. "Though she has personally done nothing wrong or illegitimate, in the face of a serious emergency that has come to light regarding the use of public funds, she tendered her resignation to help usher in change," Berlusconi said in an interview with the Huffington Post. Polverini stepped down late Monday due to a regional scandal that erupted earlier this month when the PdL's then regional chief, Franco Fiorito, was placed under investigation for suspected embezzlement of party funds. Polverini was elected Lazio regional govenor in 2010 with 51.1% of the vote.
