Gene therapy rapidly improving, says Italian specialist

(ANSA) - Rome, September 17 - Gene therapy, which aims to correct health problems at the body's most basic level, will soon see a revolution, says Luigi Notarangelo, a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston. That's because the processes for correcting and reducing genetic diseases in patients will be greatly assisted by a new 'virus shuttle' to better insert genes into malfunctioning cells. ''There has been a considerable effort in recent years to try to find new ways to more safely insert the gene into the cell,'' particularly in cancer research, said Notarangelo, who spoke Tuesday at a conference in Florence. ''We are still in the pre-clinical phase, but the results from the laboratories are excellent''. ßß
