Soccer: Gasperini takes over at Palermo

(ANSA) - Rome, September 17 - Gian Piero Gasperini has taken over at Palermo after Giuseppe Sannino became Serie A's first coaching casualty of the season at the weekend, just three matches into the campaign. Sannino was sacked by notoriously quick-firing Palermo Chairman Maurizio Zamparini despite the Sicilian side earning their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw with Cagliari on Saturday. Gasperini has not worked since a dire, short spell at Inter Milan ended with him being sacked early last term. The 54-year-old made his name by steering Genoa to promotion to Serie A in 2008 and getting Italy's oldest club to play attractive, attacking football in the top flight in the following seasons before a poor run led to his dismissal in November 2010.
