Rome police unearth weapons rental business

(ANSA) - Rome, September 14 - A weapons rental business thought to be used by violent criminals has been discovered on the outskirts of Rome by law enforcement officers. Police found guns, ammunition and more than 250 grams of hashish in a basement in the Primavalle neighbourhood of Rome. Investigators are trying to determine the location of a 43-year-old Roman male that already has a criminal record for robberies and arms possession. The police found hidden in a duffle bag a rifle; a Beretta '7,65' pistol with the ID number filed off; a ski mask; and 263 bullets of various calibre including 919, 38, 357, 22 and 7.65. The vast quantity of ammunition brought investigators to the conclusion that they were part of a weapon rentals business. Police are now carrying out ballistics tests to determine if one of the weapons found in the stash is the same that was used to kill Marco Zioni, 37, in the nearby Montespaccato neighbourhood on February 21.
