(ANSA) – Rome, September 14 – Ex-Juventus forward Alex Del Piero departed Italy on Friday to begin a new stage in his glorious career on the other side of the globe. The 37-year-old former captain is to begin a two-year contract with Sydney football club in Australia. Del Piero, for many years considered one of Italy's most talented players, had played with the Turin team for 19 years. "I can't wait to start playing again," he said at Milan's Malpensa airport. "In many respects for Juve this is a 'see you soon' rather than a 'farewell'". There is great excitement in Sydney surrounding the forward's arrival – so much so that a home match against Perth Glory in late October has been moved to the Olympic stadium in anticipation of a high turnout. The club reportedly paid over two million euros for Del Piero – the biggest investment ever made in Australia for a football player – in a move that should also improve the fortunes of the beautiful game in a country that has historically favoured the oval-shaped ball.
