New smartphone app launched to signal oil leaks at sea

(ANSA) – Florence, September 14 - A new app designed for smartphones that permits users to determine if there are oil spills at sea has been launched by a research centre in the northern city of Pisa. The new Argo Sentinel app has been developed by the Signals and Images (Si-Lab) laboratory of the National Research Council (CNR) research centre. The Argo Sentinel app has two alarm signals, a message area where information in relation to the oil spill is provided, a latitude and longitude coordinates display for the spill alert, and a mechanism that permits the user to alert the authorities of the incident. Sailors and navigators who wish to stay informed on the state of the sea can download the instrument from online platform Google Play. The environmentally friendly app can also be monitored from Facebook and Twitter.
