Probe opened after 'throat cut' Facebook post

Grillo party dissident Favia receives death threats

(ANSA) – Bologna, September 13 – Prosecutors in Bologna on Thursday said they would follow up on a death threat received by Giovanni Favia, a dissident member of gadfly comedian Beppe Grillo's populist Five Star Movement (M5S). "All necessary investigations will be carried out rapidly to identify the author, as always happens in such cases, if a formal complaint is filed," said a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office in relation to the threat received by the Emilia Romagna regional councillor on his Facebook page on Wednesday. "Favia should have his throat cut in public. Those who behave like this must be eliminated," read the anonymous post. Favia is at the centre of a bitter row within the M5S after denouncing the amount of power held by Grillo and the party's co-founder Gianroberto Casaleggio in off-the-record comments broadcast last week. Grillo has since distanced himself from Favia, who accused the comedian of trying to kick him out.
