EADS, BAE merger big step for EU defence says Finmeccanica

(ANSA) – Rome, September 13 - The announced negotiations relating to a possible merger of defence industry operators EADS and BAE Systems “is an important step in the process of the consolidation of the European defence industry,” Italy’s state-controlled defence company Finmccanica said in a statement Thursday. “It becomes even more significant in geopolitical terms if one considers recent bilateral accords drawn up between France and Germany and France and the U.K,” Finmeccanica added. The merger would create the world's largest aerospace and defence company if it takes place, and Finmeccanica said it planned to continue its current "consolidated partnerships with both companies" with the new entity. EADS, or European Aeronautic Space & Defence C., is the parent company of Airbus.
