Italy's national debt fell in July, says Bank of Italy

(see related story on Italy's public finances) (ANSA) - Rome, September 13 - Italy's public debt fell in July after hitting a record high the previous month, the Bank of Italy said on Thursday. The central bank said the national debt stood at 1,967 billion euros in July, compared to 1,972.9 billion euros in June, for the first fall since February. It added that tax revenues in the first seven months of 2012 were up 3.6% compared to the same period in 2011 at 7.7 billion. Premier Mario Monti's technocrat government increased taxes in December as part of its 'Save Italy' austerity package.
