Camusso, unions respond to govt calls for more productivity

'Growth cannot come on backs of workers alone' says CGIL

(ANSA) - Rome, September 11 - The head of Italy's most powerful labor union on Tuesday said that economic growth cannot come on the backs of workers alone. In a meeting with labor leaders and Italian Premier Mario Monti, CGIL chief Susanna Camusso said that politicians needed to make changes to the Italian industrial policy as well, according to sources. The talks were centered around the likely shutdown of a Sardinian Alcoa aluminum plant, which Monday sparked violent clashes between demonstrators and police in Rome. Monti's government is arguing that a more secure work environment cannot come without increasing productivity while lowering labor costs.
