Italy must up productivity, lower labor costs, Monti says

(ANSA) - Rome, September 11 - Italy must follow Greece's example of increasing productivity and lowering labor costs, Italian Premier Mario Monti said Tuesday. In a meeting with labor union leaders, the premier said that "Greece, Spain, Ireland and Portugal have boosted productivity and lowered labor costs, turning around a negative trend, while Italy has not improved productivity and has increased labor costs," according to sources. The talks were centered around the likely shutdown of a Sardinian Alcoa aluminum plant, which Monday sparked violent clashes between demonstrators and police in Rome.
