Sick Italian baby arrives from Cairo for treatment

(ANSA) - Turin, September 7 - A three-month-old Italian boy suffering from pulmonary fibrosis and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy arrived in Turin on Friday for medical treatment after being blocked at a Cairo clinic because his parents could not afford to pay their medical bills. The Italian foreign ministry intervened to assist the couple who run a pizzeria in the Red sea resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh. The baby, Samuele Canova, had been admitted to the American Hospital in the Egyptian capital, where his parents had already spent 100,000 euros in treatment. The hospital authorities reportedly refused to release the young patient until all the bills had been paid off, but the family had run out of money. The baby was flown to Italy by military aircraft and transferred immediately to the Regina Margherita hospital in Turin. His condition is said to be very serious.
