Neapolitan town known for seismic activity since ancient times

Quakes hit Puzzuoli

(ANSA) - Pozzuoli, September 7 - Quakes and strong explosions rumbled through Pozzuoli near Naples Friday, bringing people out onto the streets. The epicentre was in the Solfatara volcano, known as the mythological home of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. The area around the Neapolitan fishing town, called the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields), has been notorious since ancient times for its seismic activity. It was once believed to be a 'hellmouth' or entrance to the underworld.
