Layoff hours have jumped almost 20% so far in 2012 in Italy

(ANSA) - Rome, September 5 - The recession in Italy is biting hard into workers as authorized hours of layoffs jumped by almost 20% in the first eight months of this year, the country's national insurance agency INPS reported Wednesday. Compared with the same period last year, layoff hours increase by 18.7%, which translates to about 67 million fewer hours of work between January and August of 2012 compared with a year ago. Making matters worse, INPS reported a jump of 14.8% in the number of applications for unemployment benefits in the first seven months of this year, compared with the same period last year. It reported that 763,256 Italians applied for benefits during the period, compared with 664,989 in the first seven months of 2011. photo: a union protest against unemployment.
