Sardinian miners end week-long underground strike

(ANSA) - Rome, September 3 - Workers on strike at a Sardinian coalmine that is at the centre of a high-profile industrial dispute will end their week-long occupation of the mines, union representatives said on Monday. Miners working for the Carbonia-Iglesis coal company who have been held up underground for eight days agreed to end their strike in anticipation of meetings between Sardinian regional authorities, company directors and Industry Minister Corrado Passera slated for Friday. The employees occupied the Nuraxi Figus mine in the Sulcis coal basin in southwestern Sardinia asking the government to go ahead with plans for clean-coal technology and CO2 storage which they say would give them greater employment security.
