(ANSA) - Verbania, August 30 - Damage to the northern Piedmont town of Verbania from storms and tornados brought on by shifting weather systems last weekend has initially been estimated at 7.7 million euros, city officials said Thursday. "The damage is overwhelming," Verbania Mayor Marco Zacchera said. "It is likely that we will not be able to cover the costs alone". Changes in Italy's relentless heat wave have created an unpleasant counter effect, causing high winds and tornados. Two tourists visiting the historic gardens of Villa Taranto in Verbania last Sunday were injured when a funnel cloud briefly touched down on the property.
