Handicapped man brutally beaten as crowd watches

(ANSA) - Reggio Calabria, August 30 - Police arrested one man and charged two others with alleged assault and injury in the Calabrian town of Marina di Gioisa Jonica on Thursday after they pulled a handicapped man and his friend from a car and beat them on the road in front of a crowd of onlookers. The victim reportedly shouted at 29-year-old Boccucci Onofrio after he cut him off on the road while driving. Bonuccio allegedly called on two friends, 15 and 17-years-old, to assist him. Together the three drug the couple from their vehicle and began to "ferociously" beat them with a rod and kick them, police said. Two off-duty police ran to the rescue after they heard cries for help, but were blocked by a crowd of onlookers who attempted to protect the aggressors. The beaten couple was taken to a hospital in the nearby town of Locri, where they were treated for contusions and broken bones. Police say the attack weapon was found in the suspect's car near the crime scene.
