Premier to visit capital as well as Erbil during one-day stop

Renzi arrives in Baghdad for meetings with Iraq leaders

Rome, August 20 - Premier Matteo Renzi landed in Baghdad Wednesday morning for a brief visit to the war-torn country where he was scheduled to tour a refugee camp in Erbil. In the Iraqi capital, Renzi was scheduled to meet President Fuad Masum, who is in charge of forming the new government of Haidara Al Abadi, as well as the outgoing prime minister Nuri Al Maliki. His visit comes as the Italian parliament begins debate over arming Kurds against ISIS militants and the Italian government readies aid shipments. While in Erbil, the Italian premier is also expected to meet the president of the Kurdistan regional government, Masud Barzani. The trip came after Renzi last week vowed to start arming the Kurdish pesh merga along with other western countries who have already started doing so. It will take 24-36 hours to start shipments once the Italian parliament approves the measures.
