Pussy Riot supporters protest at Venice Biennale

(ANSA) - Venice, August 29 - Protesters supporting the imprisoned members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot descended on the Russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale Wednesday. Hundreds of demonstrators wearing colored masks gathered in the gardens surrounding the pavilion carrying banners and chanting. Protest organizers said that they would also gather at Venice's film festival later in the day. Members of the all female band hit international headlines after their arrest in July for singing a 'punk prayer' in an Orthodox church in Moscow asking the Virgin Mary to rid Russia of Putin. The case has attracted support from music industry legends, including pop veteran Madonna, who urged a concert crowd to pray for their release in Moscow earlier this month.
