Storms and rain to bring abrupt end to summer

ANSA - Rome - 29 August - Summer ends Friday with Poppea, a turbulent weather front causing storms and heavy rains, forecasters said Wednesday. The centre-north and Campania area, which until now have smouldered in one of the hottest summers for 50 years, will be hit by the autumnal weather system, while Sardinia will be battered by Mistral winds and rain. According to Antonio Sano' of Meteo.it, "From late Friday morning, Liguria, Lombardia, Emilia, and Tuscany are on high alert for storms and hail, as well as Umbria and Triveneto, where it will rain until the evening." Rome is also likely to be hit by bad weather, as well as Veneto where heavy rain is expected tonight. Temperatures in the south of the country, however, are expected to rise. Poppea is expected to remain around the Mediterranean until the end of week when it will cause temperatures - especially in the centre north to plummet up to 15 degrees. According to 3bmeteo.com director Sergio Brivio, "Poppea forms the first Mediterranean cyclone of the autumn season. Usually this type of weather front occurs during the month of September. We are therefore a bit ahead of schedule". "But this doesn't mean that summer is over: from mid next week we will gradually shift to the sunniest time."
