159 Italian forest fires rage, majority in Campania region

(ANSA) - Rome, August 29 - Firefighters in Italy were dealing Wednesday with fully 159 infernos, products of the long hot, dry summer. Authorities say the region most affected by forest fires continues to be Campania, south of Rome, with almost 90 fires; followed by Calabria with 21 and Tuscany fighting 13 fires. Lazio province, home to capital city Rome, has reported 10 fires and Basilicata fire crews are facing nine fires. The hottest province is Salerno with 43 fires, followed by Caserta with 18, and Napoli with 12. The Amalfi Coast has been plagued by fire this summer, and the national forest service has applied both ground crews and water carriers to fight blazes breaking out near the community of Vietri-sul-Mare, and in San Rufo, Amalfi and Maiori.
