Sicilian consortium planning to revive failed carrier

Windjet rescue plan in the works

(ANSA) - Palermo, August 29 - A consortium of Sicilian entrepreneurs is developing a plan to rescue failed low-cost airline Windjet, ANSA has learned. The group is said to include business people from the food services industry as well as as aeronautical engineer Francesco Surace, a former Windjet employee, and Roberto Corrao, a medical doctor whose company Aviomed specializes in air transport for the ill. Windjet, founded in 2003, had been struggling financially for some time before it was finally forced to cancel flights and suspend operations in mid-August, stranding thousands of passengers. Take-over talks with Alitalia also collapsed soon after.
