Beverage tax considered as part of healthcare bill

Increase could raise 250 million euros in revenues

Beverage tax considered as part of healthcare bill

(ANSA) - Rome, August 28 - A beverage tax being considered in Italy as part of a healthcare spending bill could encourage "sounder lifestyles without harming soft-drink sector earnings," Health Minister Renato Balduzzi said Tuesday. The government says it may propose a tax increase that could raise the cost of soft drinks by 3 cents per bottle, simultaneously raising revenues of up to 250 million euros. Balduzzi said during an interview on state broadcaster RAI Radio Uno that the higher price was not exorbitant, but was sufficient to make consumers "reflect about their choices" and hopefully make healthier ones.
