Environment minister to return to Taranto in September

(ANSA) - Rome, August 27 - Italian Environment Minister Corrado Clini is to return to the southern city of Taranto on September 14 to assess progress in mapping out the environmental upgrades needed to bring the troubled ILVA steelworks into line with European and regional norms, the environment ministry said on Monday. During his visit in September the environment minister will also meet with representatives of local stakeholder associations that have asked to be heard. Last Monday a court of review confirmed an earlier ruling to close part of the steel mill over long-standing pollution concerns in a move which ILVA says will essentially halt production not just in Taranto but at its other plants as well. The company, workers, the unions and the Italian government have all been fighting to keep the plant in the southern port city in operation while the environmental upgrades are made.
