Loss of skilled labourers a problem, Riccardi says

Crisis drives out foreign immigrant workers, says minister

(ANSA) - Rome, August 27 - The economic crisis gripping Italy has driven away as many as one million foreign workers, creating a "loss" for the country, Italy's minister for economic cooperation (aid) and integration said Monday. Foreigners are returning home or fleeing to other European countries "where it is easier to find work and integrate," Andrea Riccardi said in an interview with ANSA. He noted that the most recent Italian census data showed a drop of about one million foreign workers, although that number may be overestimated, said the minister. Many of those are skilled labourers who are in high demand by employers, said Riccardi, adding: "it is a phenomenon that is likely to result in a loss for our country".
