Fires continue to blaze in southern Italy

(ANSA) - Matera, August 27 - Despite cooler weather conditions and scattered thunderstorms throughout Italy, fires that have been rampaging in the country over the summer continue to blaze in the southern region of Basilicata. Two Canadair planes and government helicopters are battling forest fires in the territory of Pisticci near the town of Matera, authorities said on Monday. Italy's civil protection forces have asked that a state of emergency be declared for the area and that families be evacuated to avoid smoke inhalation.
