Rome, September 18 - A Liberia-flagged merchant ship picked up 270 asylum seekers just south of the southern Italian island of Lampedusa overnight and is taking them to Italy, the Italian Navy said Wednesday. The rescue took place in waters where Malta has search-and-rescue duties. A woman who gave birth during the crossing from North Africa was among those on board the struggling migrant craft. On Tuesday around a thousand migrants, many of them Syrians, were picked up from five rickety vessels.
