Expulsion order and fine rejected for immigrant who married

Rome, July 29 - Italy's supreme Cassation Court on Monday tossed out a 5,000-euro fine, expulsion order and conviction for a non-European immigrant caught on Italian territory without a visa just prior to marrying an Italian citizen. The young man was stopped by police in August 2011 just before his planned wedding, which took place less than three months later. The marriage made him eligible for a residence permit, which he received in January 2012. A Cassation judge ruled that the man was within his legal rights when he married on Italian territory, and thus subject to neither expulsion nor the fine.
