Approves new registry for de facto couples, same sex or not

Genoa passes same sex civil unions

Genoa, May 22 - The city of Genoa approved civil unions on Wednesday for heterosexual and homosexual couples alike. The city council measure will create a city registry for civil unions with provisions aimed at putting the rights and duties of established, unmarried couples - regardless of sex - on par with those of married couples. The first such unions are expected to take place before summer. In Wednesday's vote, there were 27 votes in favour, 11 against and 2 abstentions. The centre-left and anti-establishment 5-Star Movement council members made up the majority vote. Conservatives cast ballots against the measure, including members of Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom Party (PdL), the regionalist Northern League, and the law-and-order Italy of Values party.
